Taxes are forever

Voice communications have classically been tarriffed by government. So as VoIP evolves so will it's pricing and cost to the consumer as a result of taxes.

In Nov 2004 the FCC said: "... it labeled the services of VoIP providers such as Vonage fundamentally interstate in nature and therefore exempt from regulation by state public utilities commissions..."

Jun 1, 2006 - the most recent FCC proposal is to add VoIP services to the Universal Service Fund (USF). This would force many low rate VoIP providers to add tax to prices, but some providers (i.e. Vonage) have already been collecting taxes.

VoIP is going wireless

As early as Sep/04 Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) announced the integration of voice over WLAN. Based on the OMAP processor, the chip set integrates both handset and headset, as well as power and battery management.

In 2005 leading IP-PBX vendors (3Com, Avaya, Cisco, Mitel etc) announced availability of various wireless VoIP handsets. As of May/06 Toshiba has joined in, offering both a WiFi 802.11b unit (Hitachi) and a 900 Mhz unit (Spectralink).
