Clouds, are items we seldom think about. Yet they
can cover huge areas, hold tremendous power and
still provide benefit to every individual: shade, rain and
beauty to name only a few. "Cloud
Computing" is fast becoming a dominant form (see our Nov 2007
newsletter) of
computer processing. The term is used to describe
rich, complex applications delivered via the internet.
E-mail is one example of cloud computing
and used by virtually everyone.
"Cloud apps" provide even very small companies
access to massive data centers, powerful servers and
seemingly endless storage. They can be used
from anywhere that has access to a suitable internet
connection (indluding wireless) and a standard
browser. "Google Apps" has quickly become a
leading "cloud computing" solution - providing Email /
shared calendaring, word processing, spreadsheet
and other primary functions for daily operations.
Benefits of Cloud Computing:
- Disaster / Emergency - snowstorms and
other natural occurences that can keep employees
from having access to normal office based systems
can be overcome.
- AAA Computing - Anytime,
Anywhere, Any Device, is a natural
by-product of this type of computing. Windows, Linux,
Apple, Sun - all these types of computers have equal
access to the same functions and same data.
- Telecommuting - can be extremely
expensive to setup (equipment, procedures, security
etc) for companies that use it only occasionally. Cloud
computing frees the organization from major
infrastructure costs and burden.
- Short Term Growth Spikes - new company
acquisitions, seasonal demands and unique 1 time
projects that demand full secured connectivity can all
benefit from the very fast deployment / implementation
times cloud computing allows.
- Leveraging WIMAX - a wireless
Broadband technology that will replace the
very limited distance WiFi (i.e. Starbucks Hotspot)
connections we use today. Providing high speed (1,2
or 10 Mbytes) bi-directional internet connectivity with a
range of miles vs feet. This redefines the meaning of
access for facilities that have no easy access to wired
services.
